Wimbledon Adopts Video Review System in 2025.

The Championships court with replay technology

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in implementing video review technology.

Video review technology will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Players are granted the option to challenge certain rulings made by the chair umpire, following the system currently in use at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

The new system will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This development comes just a season following the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which effectively ended the 147-year role of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the official to review specific situations, including:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a competitor can ask for.

A Recent Example

A recent example took place in Indian Wells recently, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a tough call for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire viewed a video and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

This technology are not new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system in place at every one of its events.

Additional Innovations

Another innovation at The Championships this year will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where spectators have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was out or in.

Finally, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
