Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who end conventional diet and exercise programs.
Research printed in a leading health publication shows that while overweight people often shed a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"People using such drugs must be informed of the risk of rapid weight regain when the treatment concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery suggests a return to starting mass within about 18 months.
Weighing Therapies
The research, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
Researchers note that people who lose weight through diet and exercise generally experience a slower weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Doctors believe the mechanism of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."
A Lifelong Disease?
Medical guidelines suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals say that, considering the high risk of relapse, the therapy might need to be long-term.
This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "emphasize the long-term nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Testimonies
Users who have come off the medication explain a sudden return of appetite.
"It was like a trigger flipping and you become ravenous," recalled a patient.
The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Significant Interest
Survey data suggest that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.
- Use is greater among women than males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success hinges on integrated lifestyle support.
